During his training, he won the Dutch Resuscitation Competition and did a secondment with London’s Air Ambulance. After his residency he followed the fellowship in Intensive Care at the University Medical Center of Utrecht. Next to his work in anesthesia, Hans worked as an EMS Medical Director of the AmbuCare Ambulance Service. Currently he workes as a consultant anesthesiologist in the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Amsterdam. His areas of interest are resuscitation, airway management, emergency medicine (both in- and prehospital) and human factors. He published on prehospital care by ambulance nurses and HEMS physicians in the Netherlands and is now conducting research as a PhD student on airway management and ventilation during out of hospital cardiac arrest, as part of the AmsteRdam REsuscitation STudies (ARREST) of dr. Ruud Koster. He enjoys giving courses in Advanced Life Support (ERC) and airway management. Memberships include Dutch Society of Anesthesiology (including section on Emergency Medicine), ESA and ERC. Hans is active on social media through LinkedIn and Twitter (@HansvanSchuppen). And he is is an editor of the online resource http://www.urgentiegeneeskunde.com.
